a sound card is what give your computer the ability to make sound. Better qualities of sound cards give off better sounds from your speakers. You can buy one at wal-mart,futureshop, best buy, all those kinds of stores.

If you have a desktop computer, a soundcard is a electronic circuit that takes signals from the main board of your computer in the form of a bunch of 1s and 0s, it converts these 1s and 0s to analog sound which your speakers can play, there is a chip called a Digital to Analog converter to do so.

Rarely any computer comes without onboard soundcard built in which may be disabled, look under my computer -> right click -> properties -> hardware -> device manager -> sound video and game controllers is where my soundcard appears, also look on the back of your computer for things that look like the jack on ipod,usually green that will mean you have integrated sound.

To buy a soundcard go to newegg or tigerdirect and purchase a pci soundcard if you have a desktop or a pcmcia or expresscard soundcard if you have a laptop.

Your computer likely has integrated sound which should work, but it just lacks the drivers to make it work, or your speakers arent properly set up
