  1. a pitcher who throws left handed.  It comes from the stardard way most ballparks are set up a left handed pitcher is throwing with his arm that is on the south side of his body while facing home plate

The term originated because baseball fields used to be built so looking out from home plate to center field you'd be looking to the East so the sun would be behind the batter..  So when a left hander was pitching his pitching hand was facing the south so they started calling lefthanders, Southpaws.
