1. Hello there - cool question!

There are many kinds of psychological tests - I believe you're asking about personality tests, so I'll review those.

Most personality tests are based on self-report. This means you fill out a questionnaire that asks you to report how you perceive yourself.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (called the M.B.T.I.) for example, asks you to report how to see yourself in different situations, such as "Are you more talkative or quiet?".

Overall, after responding to several questions, the M.B.T.I. assigns a score, and this provides you insight into your personality.

Generally personality tests are conducted using reliable (scientifically consistent) questionnaires that measure something very specific, like outgoingness.

The Myers-Briggs is only one example.

A highly qualified administrator of a personality test understands that even a scientific test isn't perfect - the person taking the test can make mistakes, or might be having a bad day/misreading the questions, etc. - and will use the data from the questionnaire as a guide along with observations of the person.

It takes a lot of skill to do personality testing.

    Hope this helps! :)

  2. it depends on what kind of test you're doing. I was recently in an inpatient program where we were all given about twenty pages of questions to rate on a scale from one to five, questions about how social you are, what you think about, things like that. These types of tests are set up so that if you answer a certain number from one set a certain way, there's a good chance you have (fill in the blank). There are other tests they do sometimes, like sleep deprivation, things like that, but those aren't usually done.

Pretty much the same as every stupid personality test you come across on the internet, answer the question, and afterwards, they tell you what you are or aren't. Except the kinds a therapist or counsellor would give you are actually accurate, most of the time.

  3. There are many different kinds: structured such as the MMPI...T/F questions, over 500, built in lie scale. It has already determined scoring procedures. There are many structured personality tests like this.

There are also projective personalityassessments such as the TAT, Thematic Apperception Test (ambiguous figures, no words, no color) and the Rorschach Inkblot Test. Both were developed so the client could project his/her personality into the ambiguous stimulus. Scoring is not as clear, but takes a professional with many hours of class and experience to do so. (college psych professor)
