  1. Starch grains are formed by plants as a food reserve in the cells as the result of photosynthesis.  Composed of amylose, a polysaccharide, the grains often shows layers in its structure.  An expert can tell in which plant a particular grain is formed by its structure.  Starch is abundant in grains, potatoes and other plants.  The starch is metabolized in grains when the seed sprouts after dormancy and potatoes from the underground stem called a tuber.
