  1. A device invented by Nobeli in the 1870's.

    It was similar to the galvanometer invented by Ampere, but it used two needles, each with separate coils, which allowed the device to be placed irrespective of it's relationship with the Earth's magnetic meridian. It also allowed the use of a longer needle, which increased the size of the gauge thus giving more accurate readings.  It was capable of sensing extremely small currents, up to one ten millionth of an ampere.
