I live in Mission, British Columbia and am 16 years old. I am hoping to be a airline pilot. I have recently taken my first flying lesson (it was awesome!!!) and afterwards picked up a little book, which is the course outline for the private pilot program. Now in this book it said that you have to be 17 years old to complete the private pilot program, so I'm to young to do this. It then said that you have to be 14 years old to complete the Student Pilot Permit. My question is:

What is the Student Pilot Permit?

Do I need this to be able to do my Private Pilot Program?

The totally cost of the Private Pilot Program is $8172.

Do I have to pay extra for my Student Pilot Permit or is included in the Private Pilot Program??

Thanks a lot for your help. Its greatly appreciated.

  1. A student pilot permit is a permit prior to private pilots license. It allows you to fly as a student with a licensed flight instructor.

A student pilot permit might not be required, it all depends on the school. You can approach your instructor and ask them if student pilot permit is already included in $8172.. All flight instructors would be willing to help you.

  2. Congrats on taking your first flying lesson! It's always quite exciting.

A student pilot permit is a different thing in Canada than it is in the US, hence the bit of confusion with the previous posters. The rules are slightly different up here north of the border.

In Canada, a student pilot permit is required in order for you to fly solo - that is by yourself, without an instructor and without passengers.

In order to get your student pilot permit, you must be 14 years old and have passed a written exam called the PSTAR. I recommend checking out Robyn's Flying Start to help you study for it. http://fly.wabyn.net/FlightTraining/PSTA...

Because you need to go solo in order to obtain your Private Pilot Licence, you need to get your student pilot permit in order to eventually get your PPL. I'm not sure if there's any extra cost involved in written the PSTAR, but if there is, it's not that expensive. There is no official Flight Test in order to get your PSTAR.

Since you're 16, you're eligible to fly solo (in Canada). You'd also be eligible to obtain your recreational pilot permit which would allow you to carry 1 passenger. Once you turn 17 and have passed the required flight tests and written exams, you can carry more than one passenger.

Good Luck, and if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail me at the address listed on my blog.

  3. Ok, so I'm in pretty much exactly the same situation. It means that you have to be 17 to get your full license, to carry passengers. You can be 16 years of age to go solo, you just need a lot of hours up. I'd suggest, save up money, and fly for 2 weeks pretty solid, I got told that by a family friend that's an F/A-18 pilot, he's going to be my instructor. He said that it's better to do get hours up if it's more solid, rather than just go once a month, that way you retain more information and get loads of practice. It's roughly 15 hours to go solo, give or take a few hours. Which is about $3,000. So it's kind of expensive, but worth it.

I hope I helped and explained it properly. If you want to ask any more questions email me: daniellmclachlan@gmail.com

  4. it's not going to be given to you. It is a class 3 medical.  It allows you to fly solo and is rquired to complete training.  I did the same as i started flying at 15.  I completed the program, slightly different, but when i turned 17 i went in to the office and was upgraded on the spot.  I completed all tests and flight checks and had over 200 hours when i got my license.  I have my commercial and multi and turbine ratings although i do not fly for a living anymore.  good luck.

  5. Sort of Dan, but not exactly...

The "Student Pilot Permit" must be something your flight school has. A stupid pilots license is basically your medical endorsed for you to fly the plane alone. Its not another rating, its just basically a step in your training, whether it be your first solo or a x-country, you need your medical to perform.

Yes you need a "medical" to finish your flight training, simply because you need the medical to get your license,
