Neither I nor any of the search engines I use appear to have ever heard of a 'sub heading lols' or even just a 'sub heading'.

Did you mean to ask about a 'subheading'? If so, it's simply the heading given to a subdivision of a text; for instance: when writing a report, you have a main heading/title (that of the report itself) followed by a list of subheadings for each individual section of the report.

If one was going to write a report on the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling, for instance, it might go something like:

'The Advantages and Disadvantages of Homeschooling'

-- introduction to report here --

'The Advantages of Homeschooling'

-- paragraphs discussing the advantages of home-ed here --

'The Disadvantages of Homeschooling'

-- paragraphs discussing the disadvantages of home-ed here --

'Conclusion'

-- concluding paragraph here --

Incidentally subheadings only go in a report, never in an essay.
