  1. A "subsistence system" refers to subsistence farming. Individual families grow their own food and it generally enough to feed that one family. It is dependent on each family having their own parcel of land to farm. A lot of African communities are subsistence. Colonialism destroys subsistence because it seeks to own most of the land (taking it from subsistence farmers) and turning it into land farmed for profit.
