It's a notice from the court that you have been summoned and is required to appear in the court. If you dont, they will issue warrant for your arrest.

A subpoena can be a wide variety of things. When you subpoena the phone company, you are demanding to see their records. A subpoena is an order from the court. It can not be ignored and if it is then that individual will be held liable for such actions.

user law student is right.  a subpoena can be many things including but not limited to requests for documents, appearence, witness, and trial appearence, etc.  subpoena's can be opposed and everyone has the legal right to object to them and challenge the legality of such.  I quash subpoena's all day long.
