  1.      An explanation, written in the present tense, of a story or novel.  It should cover all the main aspects of the story, but there mustn't be any dialogue.

  2. syn·op·sis

    1. a brief or condensed statement giving a general view of some subject.

    2. a compendium of heads or short paragraphs giving a view of the whole.

    3. a brief summary of the plot of a novel, motion picture, play, etc.

  3. Earlier in the year my teacher had us write a short story and we had to write a synopsis.  It went like this:

Setting - Describe the major spots where action will happen in detail.

Characters - Describe the main characters (what they look like and age) and then minor characters.

Narration - How it's going to be narrated?  Omniscient, 1st, 3rd person, etc.

Summary - This was where I went through scene by scene (chapter by chapter if it's a novel) and wrote down a brief summary.  I ended up going farther ahead.  For example something I had set up for scene 6 was used in scene 3 instead, but it gave a broad outline for where my story was going to go.
