  1. I've wondered this too, and never really seen a lot of difference other than barrel length.

  2. generally, tactical refers to barrel length and sometimes adjustable sights.  A tactical will have a roughly 5 inch barrel, while a standard will have a 4.5 to 4.0 (sometimes a 3.5), and a compact will have an even shorter barrel, usually around 3.5 to sometimes even 3 inch barrel.  Alternatively, sometimes a compact will have the same 4 inch barrel as standard, but will have a slightly shorter grip.

    http://www.glock.com/english/index_pisto... click the models marked 'competition' and you will see they are called the practical/tactical

    practical/tactical = 5.3

    standard = 4.5

    compact = 4.0(with a slightly shorter grip, 15 rounds of 9mm, not 17)

    subcompact = 3.5 (with a very short grip)

    same with springfield XD http://www.springfield-armory.com/xd.php...

    tactical = 5 inch

    standard = 4 inch

    compact = 4 inch with shorter grip

    subcompact = 3 inch with shorter grip

    and same with H&K USP

    http://www.hk-usa.com/products.html

    tactical = 5 inch barrel  for 45acp, 4.75 for 9mm

    standard = 4.4 inch barrel for 45acp, 4.25 inch for 9mm

    compact = 3.8 inch barrel for 45acp, 3.5 for 9mm, plus a shorter grip.

    "Tactical Compact' features a shorter grip like the standard barrel, but with a longer barrel, and in H&K's case, all tacticals can be had with threaded barrels to accept supressors.

    In all three of these major manufacturers ALL models come with rails for mounting lights and lasers.  Some fanboys who talk about 'getting all tactical' mean lights and lasers and whiz-bang gadets, but when a gun company tags a model as tactical they mean 'long barrel'

  3. Along with what others have already said some may also have threaded barrels for suppressors.

  4. About a year ago, I was doing some reasearch on a small pistol that my husband wanted me to purchase.  I found a site that gave great tips for women.  You probably don't need it, so I'll just give you a quick rundown of what it said.  With a compact pistol, you have less muzzle control because of the shorter barrel.  A lot of people really like the compacts, but personally, the tactical would be a better choice.  I'm sure you're not going to be carrying it in a purse, so get the bigger gun would be the best bet.

  5. tactical pistols are usually specialized for combat/close quarters use. you will often find standard guns such as the 1911 reconfigured into tactical pistols by adding beavertail grip safetys, stipling on the front of the grip, larger, easier to see sights such as tritium glow in the dark sights, beveled magazine wells and extra capacity magazines.

    there are many guns nowdays that come direct from the manufacture as tactical guns that have sight rails on top or underneath the barrel that allow the use of flash lights or laser sights attached to the pistols. tactical obviously covers many different styles and types of guns.

    most standard or full size pistols can be converted to tactical pistols by a gunsmith.

    compact pistols are smaller, lighter, guns without a lot of bells and whistles that usually are used either as backup guns or for concealed carry.

  6. Your tact. pistol will have a rail or rails for accessories lights lasers ect... also they may not have a saftey,biger mags to!
