My six year is running a fever of 102 (highest it has been today). What is considered a normal temp for his age group?

  1. 102 temp means he needs to probably be seen at an urgent care or the doctor. His body is saying something is wrong and it is trying to fight it off. What are others symptoms? Alternate between Tylenol and Motrin. My daughter gets a very high fever anytime she is sick, even with allergies. The fever is a sign to us she is sick.

  2. 98.6F. same as for an adult.

Kids run higher fevers for less cause than adults but

102 is a matter for concern.

If it doesn't fall soon, or gets worse, see a Doctor.

  3. I believe for a child it is 100, but just to be safe call the ER and ask them, he should be ok, the heat outside could make it go up too, and if he drinks ped-a-lite to keep the liquids in him, it should come back down, you could use a cold wash cloth on his head, and behind his neck, an adults temp is 98.5 normal, but a child's normal temp is usually a little higher.

  4. 98.6 is normal. 102 is not that high. It's not so much high temp that you would worry about. It's a temp that spikes quickly and won't come down with Tylenol. Depending what the other symtoms are you might want to call your doctor and get advice. it could be just a virus but it could also be something else like an ear infection. I am not one to rush my children to the ER or doctor at the first sight of fever or sniffles like some people do. That's ridiculous and the reason why ER's are so crowded all the time.

Most doctors will tell you to bring the child in if they have had fever for 3 days straight or if the fever won't come down with medication. If your son has a runny nose, check to see if it's running clear or yellowish. Does he have any rashes, is he coughing complaining of sore throat? These are all things to consider when evaluating a fever.

My kids have ran a fever higher than that and it's been viral. I can't believe the number of people on this place who always suggest rushing a child to the ER for low temps LOL
