  1. The whole thing is a theme of struggle-the early chapter about the turtle trying to cross the road is a metaphor that is supposed to set up the whole book.  The turtle gets run over, just like the migrators do.  The turtle experiences loss, death, and struggle.

  2. dont travel with the elderly, they are the first to die and they put a real damper on the rest of the trip

the same goes for alcoholics and felons

    and little kids

    and pregnant women

  3. Grapes can get angry.

  4. The Grapes of Wrath is a classic, and also one that I have never read.  However, there are numerous free on line resources that can help you with your study of this novel, most of which analyze the story, discuss themes and symbolism and other literary devices, and give character sketches.  If you do a search you will find many helpful resources.  Additionally hundreds of questions have been asked here on Y!A about The Grapes of Wrath so do a search for it in the Yahoo Answers search window and you will find lots of Q’s and A’s that should help you.

  5. From a teacher's guide:

**Ma Joad expresses an ironic viewpoint: “If you’re in trouble or hurt or in need — go to poor

people. They’re the only ones that’ll help — the only ones.” Throughout the novel, acts of

kindness by poor people are contrasted to the greed and meanness of the rich. Analyze and

interpret this situation. What is Steinbeck saying about human nature? Why might poor people

be more generous and giving than the rich? Do you think this is true universally? In your

    community?

**What are the effects on a society when some of its people are treated inhumanely? What

happens when people lose lands, possessions, and their way of life? On the other hand, what is

the effect when some people stand up for what is right in the face of oppression?
