A tornado is when a cool air mass and a warm air mass collide. This collision causes a horizontal rotation of air. If this rotation turns upwards, it can form a funnel cloud and/or a tornado. Tornadoes also form from mesocyclones and cumulonimbus clouds in the same fashion.
