What is a torrent? Please explaine.?

I have no idea what a torrent is or are. Can someone please explaine to me what torrents are all about what they are for? is it a program, used for downloading? are they illegal? Thanks

Yes torrents are used for downloading.

They are not illegal if you are not trespassing any law (in other words you should not download movies, softwares, music and games which are not free using them).

Use softwares like utorrent, bitcomet etc for opening the torrent files.

I think I can explain you this...

torrent is a peer to peer downloading protocol. It allows one to download files from any computer connected to torrent management server.

now how it works..

when you want to download something using torrent , it means ..first go to a torrent search engine like mininova.org , search for a file/movie/music/video/game/book and when you find a name you can download the abcd.torrent file on your machine. this is not the actual file you want. now open this .torrent file with application like azreus(free on internet)

which will download the actual file like a video for you in a folder.

so .torrent will give you actual file if opened in a torrent downloading software...

Torrents are small files associated with particular content, that when opened with a bittorrent client start the transfer of that content.

First a bittorrent client is needed.  This article discusses the best free ones:

Then you go to a torrent search site, find the content you want and download the torrent associated with it.  Then you open it in your bittorrent client.  This article lists the more popular torrent search sites and their features:

Distributing copyrighted content is illegal and so the torrents with copyrighted material are illegal.

Its all P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing.. Basically think of it as a huge online community sharing selected files on there computer with all thoughs in in the community.. even people thay dont know who they are.. The torrent per say is just the way its set up..

say you want to download a funny picture... you go to a torrent site ans search funny pictures... it will give you all the files with labeled funny pictures.. then you click download and it sends it to your torrent client as a torrent file. And the torrent client uses that file to find the physical location of the funny picture.

It can be illegal if its copyrighted material being shared but it is not always.

***Dont let people discourage you from doing it.. its not illegal unless you download copyrighted stuff...

PS: Limewire is just a fancy P2P torrent client
