Torrenting is a method of downloading large files like movies or tv shows.  This website gives a really good explanation of what a torrent is and how to torrent things:

My brother downloads things all the time using torrents and he's never had a problem so I don't think they are dangerous if you use a reputable site and just follow the instructions.
