What is a tracking number?

Hi i just shipped something out from USPS and when i was at the counter i told them i wanted a tracking number for the package i was sending out. They gave me a U.S. Postal Service Delivery Confirmation Receipt with 12 numbers. They told me that this was a tracking number. Is this correct? Thanks

yes and i bet they have a web site that you can enter that # in and see it's progress
