  1. There are also other transmitters that send data in voltage, phase and current changes to indicator and recording systems.

Oil pressure & fuel flow transmitters, flight control position transmitters (usually synchros for phase errors), etc, etc, on and on.

As far as older radios, they used to be separate components. I'd worked on several in the backshop, like the Wilcox 807 and VHF101. The boxes were still tuned to the same frequency bu the control box switching to allow for transmitting and receiving on the same channel. As a matter of fact you couldn't tune the two to different freq's.

  2. A transmitter is an electronic device that sends out radio signals.  Most aircraft communications radios are "transceivers," which means a combination receiver and transmitter in one case, arranged so as to transmit and receive on one frequency.

The transmitter portion of a communications radio sends out voice signals on the selected frequency for talking to other aircraft, air traffic control facilities, and other radio users as needed.  The transmitter in use is activated when the pilot presses the "push to talk" button on the microphone or control wheel.

  3. Transmitters are a way for an onboard system to communicate with another aircraft or land station.  Some are used for other purposes like airborn radar (used to see land(mountains) weather, and other aircraft.  Radar altimeter is used to find altitude over land or water normally only good for 5000 feet or less above that Barometric altimeters are used.  There are a lot of other uses for transmitters as well but these are some of the more common.
