  1. A transition cruise is referred to as a repositioning cruise, Cruise lines reposition their ships in the fall and spring to take advantage of popular destinations, such as Alaska cruises in the summer and Caribbean cruises in the winter.

Because there are few, if any, ports between the reposition areas, they discount the fares to attract passengers who prefer to more ports in a cruise, rather than sailing the ships without passengers.

The discount is viable to the cruise companies, because that many days at sea, some passengers just gamble, gamble, and gamble. It's a good deal if you just enjoy being at sea, don't gamble much, and can find other ways of entertaining yourself.

  2. I believe you are referring to a repositioning cruise.  When a cruise line wants to move a ship from one area to another, the cruise line "repositions" the ship.  For example, during the summer many ships leave the Caribbean and go to either Europe or Alaska.  At the end of the summer the ships then reposition back to the Caribbean.

These cruises are typically longer (about two weeks) and typically have more days at sea.  In general these cruises cost less per day than a typical round trip one week cruise.  For example, I am taking a thirteen night repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal in a mid-level suite.  The cabin costs $6000.  The same cabin on a normal twelve night cruise in the Mediterranean costs $8000.  So I save $2,000 and I get one extra night.

So, while a two week repositioning cruise might cost you more overall, lets say $3,000 for a normal balcony cabin as compared to $2,000 for the same cabin for a typical one week cruise, the cost per day is less ($214 per day vs. $286 per day).  Note, on a repositioning cruise you are leaving and arriving in different cities, so the airfare might be higher than the round trip airfare to and from the same city.
