You pick the horses to win place and show. There are ways to place your bet so that postions don't matter such as to "box" your picks, this way any of the horses can come in in either the WP or S position. You can also "wheel" or "part wheel" your tri, meaning you pick the winner with other horses underneath.

My wheel ticket looks like this 8/ 14+15/ 7+ 14+15... Hard Spun to win/ Tiago + Scat Daddy to place/ Street Sense+ Tiago + Scat Daddy to show. Total cost? $8 on a $2 wager . If I boxed this bet it would look like 8+14+15, cost of $12 (on a $2 wager). If I included all 4 horses it would look like 7+8+14+15, cost of $24 on a $2 wager.

A trifecta is a particular type of bet that is very difficult to win, but it yields very high returns.
