  1. Unfortunately, it won't work without a tuner.  The coaxial hook-ups aren't the same.  At Wal-mart, they have a tv tuner (little silver box) that is about 20 bucks.  But, if you have a cable or satellite box already, then that has a built in tuner and you won't need the extra tuner.

  2. A tuner is what picks up a signal from an antenna or cable and converts it into a picture. Most TVs have at least one built-in tuner (two for features like Picture in Picture), but more and more we are getting what are basically just digital monitors that have no tuner. Those must have another device which delivers the picture. A DVD player or cable box will do.

Edit: I am assuming you do not plan to watch television, just DVDs.

So, if you have a DVD player and a television, that should be all you need (as long as the inputs and outputs match)

  3. A tuner is basically like a cable box or a radio, it lets you tune in to a particular station to watch or listen to.

A DVD player is fine without a tuner , but a DVD recorder needs a tuner.
