Value investing involves investing based on the assets and earnings of a company.  If a company's assets less debt are worth about $35 million, and the stock is selling for $30 with 1 million shares outstanding (meaning a market cap of $30 million), then that is a great value investment because the stock is selling for less than the value of the company.

    In contrast, growth investing seeks out smaller or mid size companies that might grow quickly into larger companies and thus increase earnings at a higher rate.

    In general, value investing is safer but has a bit less upside potential while growth investing can have more explosive rewards, but is much riskier and can tank out on you.
