What is a vehicle warranty?

i keep getting a phone call about renewing a vehicle warranty.

is what they are referring to the vehicle registration?

The call probably sounds says something to the effect of "your warranty is about to expire please press 2 to extend your warranty, or please call this number... etc". IT IS NOT A FACTORY WARRANTY. It is a direct seller selling for other companies. Are they a scam? Not necessarily, but they arent the safest companies to do business with.  If you are looking for coverage check with your local Credit Union or Personal Auto Insurance provider.   Regardless of who you purchase the coverage through do not let them tell you EVERYTHING is covered because I am not aware of any non factory warranty that covers everything. They all have exclusions... be it non mechanical item, maintenance items, etc...

a warranty is just a cover for your car if any thing was to go wrong such as engine or gearbox
