  1. You're confusing the old terminology with the new terminology.  

    Before March of 2005, there were only two sections: math and verbal.  Each section was worth up to 800 points, so the perfect SAT score used to be 1600.  

    Starting March 2005, the SAT completely changed.  It now is made up of three sections: math, critical reading, and writing.  The critical reading score is considered analogous to what used to be called the "verbal" score.  The writing part is completely new for the SAT, and it has nothing to do with anything that could be called a "verbal" SAT score.
