They're rare because it's a mutation, and birds must be specifically matched to produce that color.

They are Indian ringneck parakeets.  I'm not sure how that works.  Parakeets on steroids, I guess.

edit*** parakeets are a type of parrot.  I just never understood, or took the time to figure out why Indian Ringnecks are called, or considered, parakeets...

I have IRNs and I've had parakeets.  They're definitely different.

  2. A violet indian ringneck is a mutation of the regular green indian ringneck...they are considered parakeets because of their long tails. The mutation is bred with colbalt and grey birds to get the violet coloring. They are expensive and rare because it is a new mutation and not every breeder them yet. Also lots of breeders of different species are trying to produce violet ( quakers and parrotlets I know of) because violet in parrots is a color that can be achieved, and it is not often seen.

  3. They are actually both because parakeets are parrots.

and yes answer one is correct they are both a parakeet and a parrot because parakeets are parrots

  5. Number one is correct. They are hard to find and very expensive. I think the reason they are rare and expensive is because they are hard to breed to get that color mutation.
