Can someone explain what a wastegate is?

  2. its kinda like a safety valve for a turbo... it keeps the turbo from building too much pressure (boost) by opening up & relieving some of the pressure in the system..  too much boost will blow the engine apart.. keep the boost pressure under 14 or 15 pounds..
