What is a wide pencil?

My son's kindergarten teacher sent out a list of supplies he needs to bring to school. Among them is "1 box of wide pencils." What ARE they? I can't find anything called "wide pencils" anywhere. Help!

Wide wasn't really the best word for the teacher to use. I'm sure she's referring to the thick pencils made for young kids to use since little ones tend to lack the manual dexterity needed to properly use a smaller pencil. http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/seo/ca%...

i reckon they are the chunky pencils. the big fat ones that are good for little hands. all stationary supply stores have them

Look for really fat pencils, sometimes called jumbo or kindergarten size pencils with the rest of the school supplies at WalMart.  The ones I've seen come in packages of two, not boxes, but those are probably the ones she wants.

That's what we used to call a "husky" pencil: bigger around, bigger lead, easier for little hands to control.

Here is a link to Amazon to buy them, but I would think a well equipped back to school section would have some.

Try carpenter's pencil.  These are standard lead set in a wide wooden cover and available at hardware and stationery stores...easier for young hands to maintain a steadier grip.

don't worry about it. just buy him regular #2 pencils and if she says anything about it just tell her you couldn't find them anywhere. she'll have some "wide pencils" in case they didn't bring any. congrats to your son on going to school, big step in being a big boy!

Most likely they are referring to carpenter's pencils. They are pencils that are very wide so that they don't fall off tables or anything.

The only downside though is that these usually have to be sharpened by hand with a blade.

don't worry just get a box of regular pencils. i checked yahoo and google and there are no such thing as wide pencils.

Hardware store or lumber yard.  Carpenters pencils.

They're much bigger than "regular" pencils, easier for little ones to hold.

They are called "fat" pencils or "primary fat" pencils.
