Wilderness is generally defined as a natural environment on Earth that has not been modified by human activity. Wilderness areas are considered important for ecological study, conservation, solitude, and recreation. Wilderness is deeply valued for cultural, spiritual, moral and aesthetic reasons as well, some nature writers believe wilderness is vital for the human spirit and creativity. It is the wildness of a place that makes it a wilderness. The mere presence or activity of people does not disqualify an area from being "wilderness." Many ecosystems that are, or have been, inhabited or influenced by activities of people may still be considered "wild." If you are asking about areas that are "designated wilderness" in the US, these are areas set aside in such a manner that they are protected from certain activities that would be harmful.

In wilderness areas motorized travel is prohibited to keep people from tearing up the ground with off road vehicles. You may generally camp, hike, hunt, and fish but just can't use your vehicle to get where you want to be.

A wilderness designation can be very appropriate in some areas and not appropriate in others. Some groups in the US are attempting to gain wilderness designation for virtually all public lands instead of just selected sensitive areas. Much public land is leased to cattle ranchers and a wilderness designation would make use of the land almost impossible for that purpose. In other areas, there is habitat that MUST be preserved for wildlife species and in those areas it would be very appropriate.
