What is a wine that is a 'step-up' from Relax Riesling?

My Girlfriend enjoys Relax Riesling wine. Her birthday is coming up and I would like to get her a bottle of wine. I am looking at spending around $20 - $40 for a bottle. I do not know much about wine, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I HIGHLY recommend Piesporter Goldtropfchen Kabinett Riesling.

The Kabinett is the least sweet of the German Rieslings (actually, there is a Kabinett Feinherb, but it's hard to find) and this win has depth and complexity that Relax doesn't have (nor does any American Riesling).

    Trust me on this one.

  2. Relax is made by Schmitt Sohne, who are the biggest Reisling importers to the US. Their basic blue bottle imports are ok (well under 20)

    Here's their whole line:

Even if you go up into their Liebfraumilch line, you aren't going to hit $40, you might even get 2 of their Estate wines for that.

Personally, I'd find a -nice- liquor store, walk up to a clerk and say "I'm looking for a nice, sweet white wine for a gift. She likes Reislings." and go from there. Any decent store is going to have staff who know their stock and their wines and should be able to steer you to a few nice ones.

  3. It would be hard to find a bottle of Riesling in that price range.  If you wanted to stick with Riesling I would suggest William Bergman Goldtropphen Auslase.  That will be on the sweet side with a more refine taste of the grape.  One of my favorites is Chateau St. Michell Indian Wells from Washington State.  This one is drier and fruitier than the German wine.

Otherwise you can look into semi-dry white blends that have Vignoier, Gewurztraminer, Chenin Blanc, and Muscat grapes.

  4. $20!? That's class mate! Spring for 8 bottles of Arbor Mist!! It's cheap buy hey..You can buy them all and the ladies love the taste! (Though you wotn get laid!)

    Ok I really haven't a clue, merlot ?

    I really like this search:

Substitute Massachusetts for your state in Google...Wine shops have great advice (Wine searcher should shwo first)

Don't forget to lookup wine outlets in your YellowPages

Just buy the poor girl a nice dinner ask for the best wine and pop the question on a midnight stroll on the beach (or give her a necklace)

    Good luck mate!

  5. Sancere is a region in France that make wine 'softer' than a Reisling.

    I'd recommend it!
