  1. its a box sort of thing 4 ur house so u can have wireless internet.

  2. Simple Wikipedia on "wireless router":

  3. A wireless router is a network device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. ...

if you want to have  your computer or computers connected to the internet or together you would use this- but your computers would have to have a wirless network card. This way you could have your conntection to the internet upstairs in your office but be able to sit downstairs with your laptop and get onto the internet for example

  4. It is a router that is wireless meaning you don't have to use wires. but if you don't know what a router is, it is a device that makes it so more than 1 computer can use the internet at once.

  5. linksys and apple  airport express are wireless routers that will send your dsl all over the house.

  6. A wireless router is a router that sends radio waves to a wireless usb device (adapter), wireless notebook card, or some other device that will recieve and transmit signal back and forth to the wireless router.  My router at home is wireless router, but it can also take ethernet cables so its both wired and wireless router.

  7. it's a device that takes your broadband connection and reroutes it to one or more computers or other wireless devices. many have built in firewalls, port forwarding apps and all sorts of other goodies. for your computer to receive the wireless signal from the router it will need a wireless card or wireless network adapter.

  8. Its a device that connects to your internet connection and "routes" the traffic wirelessly. It will also have a built in firewall and added security because it sits at the perimeter of your network. Most Internet providers will provide one for you if you need it. Common manufacturers are Linksys, Belkin, 3com, Buffalo, and Netgear.

  9. A wireless router is a small piece of computer hardware that has an ethernet port and sends a radio signal on either 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz frequency to one or more computers that are configured with a receiving antenna either internal or plugged into the computer(s) that allows the internet to be sent without a wire or cable to computers within range and if a password is required, that password is entered. When you are accessing the internet via Wi-Fi, a wireless router is in use.

If you have cable internet for example, you would connect a cable from the wall to a cable modem (modem is short for modulate, demodulate), then connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the router. The computer could then receive a wireless internet signal from the router. Plus, other computers in range could also receive wireless internet as well. That way, you could take your laptop into other rooms in your house without connecting with wires or you could do the same in a hotel or coffee shop.

Wireless routers have improved over the years. The original standard for Wireless or Wi-Fi is called IEEE 802.11 and was released in 1997. In 1999 an improved standard was released and called 802.11a which uses 5GHz frequency and used mainly in businesses. 802.11b was released for home use and operates on 2.4GHz with a range indoors of about 125 feet, while outdoors the range is about 450 feet. The max data speed is rated at 11Mbit/s.

802.11g increases the rate to 54Mbit/s.

b and g are in common use now on both computers and routers.

The newest standard is 802.11n which uses 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz. The data speed is faster and rated at 248Mbit/s and the range is increased to 230 feet indoors and 820 feet outdoors.

If you buy a new computer with 802.11n and connect to an older 802.11b/g router, the data speed and range is limited to the router's speed and range. Also, if you have a new 802.11n router and your computer has 802.11n built-in, but another computer is on the network and that computer has 802.11g, then the data speed and range are limited to that slower standard on the network.

Routers that use the 2.4GHz frequency are subject to interference by microwave ovens, bluetooth, baby monitors and cordless phones that also use the 2.4GHz frequency. In fact, if you are using a bluetooth headset you can hear a crackling sound coming from a nearby router.

  10. This is a way to send the internet to computers without using wires.  If you connect an ethernet cable to the router (assuming you have internet going through the ethernet cable from an internet provider), you can broadcast the internet coming from that ethernet cable to a wireless network, which nearby PC's can pick up and use.

  11. First, a router is a device that connects networks/computers.  A wireless one uses at least one of the various wireless networking schemes available.  These would be 802.11b (known as WiFi), 802.11g, 802.11a, or the latest 802.11n.  The b/g standards are the most common.  All are wireless based implementations of Ethernet.
