  1. A brief proceeding in which he will be handed the charges.  Someone will read the charges to him and then he will be asked if he wishes to plead guilty or not guilty.

  2. Arraignment is when a person arrested or charged with an offense is brought before the court to have the charges read and to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.  If they need and are entitled to a lawyer that is when one will be appointed to represent them.  Depending on local procedure that may also be when a trial date is assigned.

  3. An arraignment is where the person is formally charged. He or she will get a chance to plead guilty, not guilty, or no contest. If it is a misdemeanor or an infraction he or she will probably get a fine or dismissal. If this is something big (felony) and they plead not guilty a date is set for trial and the issue of bail is worked out. If your friend has ties to the community (job or residential) and the trouble isn't serious, he or she will likely be released on their own recognizance. More serious trouble means they will either have to raise bail or stay in jail until the court date.

  4. An arraignment is an appointment with the courts. In order for the judge to tell you to your face that you are going to face a trial

Decide about if you can pay money to get out of jail before your trial.

Ask you if you would like to fight the charges or admit to them.

Determine if you want to receive a free attorney, because you cant  afford one

I'm glad to hear that you have never been in trouble. Me neither
