What is an Audition?

I know this sounds stupid. I kinda know what an audition is but I need a better explanation of it...

An audition is a process where an artistic/casting/or other kind of director basically interviews you for an acting role in either a play, film, commercial, T.V. Series or other type of acting gig. You need to perform a monologue(a short 1-person script) infront of them so they can determine whether you are the type of actor they are looking for and if you are good enough for the part they want filled. There are SO many types of auditions so I just told you the general audition I think you're talking about. well, an audition is like a tryout for a part in something; a play, a  skit, or just classes in school.

Well, an audition for a movie, TV or theater production goes a little like this:

You get called up to the stage or whatever, and act a bit of the script out, most likely a monologue but if not, the director or casting agents will read the other parts out. If it's a musical production, you will be asked to sing or dance. Also, you may be required to bring your own script or do a monologue of your choice.

Well, basicly you audition for a role.

You get called on stage and then you have to act out a scene, pretending you are that character. The scene can be something you have to invent, or follow a scenario (so they can see how well you get along with the other cast member, how you can adapt, etc etc)

It pretty much depends what you audition for, and for who, just like a job interview.
