  1. The five British peerage ranks in order of seniority are duke, marquess, earl, viscount and baron. The title Earl (Rank 3, Greater Nobility) was well established in Saxon England as the highest rank of nobility and given to the king's representative in charge of an earldom or shire. It became a hereditary title under the Normans for those governing a county. Land area associated with an Earl is the size of a small town, island, village, hamlet, or city's district.

Note: A duke is the highest rank you can achieve without being a king or a prince. Historically a duke is a high-ranking nobleman, land-owner or a prince, and in feudal times was the lord over part of the country. Today the titles are largely symbolic and there are 28 dukedoms.

  2. I believe it is the noise one makes when one is worshipping the porcelain god. It's female counterpart would be Eula.

  3. An earl is a member of the titled nobility. In order of precedence(importance) the members are duke, marquess, earl, viscount,

    baron.

A duke is more powerful than an earl; in the days of yore, a duke was given lands called a duchy. The duchy generated an income.Because the duke was in charge of the duchy, being the person who ran things for the king, the duke made an income from the goods, the taxes, generated there.

The lesser nobles also were given some lands, and sometimes the lands generated an income, but the political powers of these nobles was lesser.

  4. No, it's another title - Earl goes with Countess, Duke with Duchess, but off the top of my head I can't remember which is 'more' important, or if it's to do with land ownership..

  5. Earl is a middle-ranking British nobleman who ranked above a viscount and below a marquess. The title corresponds to ‘count’ in continental Europe. earl is kinda the same with count.

A duke is a noble person, historically of highest rank below the king or queen.

so i guess a duke is higher than an earl

  6. A duke is a noble person, historically of highest rank below the king or queen, and usually controls a duchy or a Dukedom. Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts (or earls) in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king. Furthermore, in Anglo-Saxon England, where the Roman political divisions were largely abandoned, the grade of duke was retained as supreme territorial magnate after the king. The female counterpart of a duke would be a duchess.

Earl was the Anglo-Saxon form of a title meaning "chieftain" and referring especially to chieftains set to rule a territory in a king's stead. earls had authority over their own regions and right of judgment in provincial courts, as delegated by the king. They collected fines and taxes and in return received a "third penny", one-third of the money they collected. In wartime they led the king's armies. Some shires were grouped together into larger units known as earldoms, headed by an ealdorman or earl. The English never developed a feminine form of earl; the wife of an earl is styled countess (the continental equivalent).

As to the peerage, or ranking, I pretty much think it goes this way:

    Duke

    Marquess

    Earl (or Count)

    Viscount

    Baron

Note: Baronets, oftentimes considered below in ranking to Barons, while holders of hereditary titles, are not peers.

    Hope that one helped.
