  1. hmo is a very cheap insurance with a big premium. stay away from them if you value your health.

  2. I think it stands for health maintenance organization.

  3. health maintenance organiztion=Network plans offer access to quality health care from a broad network of participating physicians. During enrollment, members may choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who may provide routine care, coordinate care and provide referrals to in-network specialists and facilities.

  4. Health Maintenance Organization

In this type of health plan most of the Doctors are employed by the insurance company. United Health Group and Kaiser are examples of HMO's. Some Blue Cross companies offer both PPO and HMO plans.

HMO's can have lower premiums than PPO's.

One problem with HMO's is as a member you have a Primary Care Provider (PCP). This is also commonly referred to as a gatekeeper. Even if you know you need to go to an orthopedic specialist you must first go visit your PCP and get a referral. Some people do not like this situation.

HMO doctors are paid bonuses for keeping expenses low. This means they may not be as quick to run test that a PPO doctor might run.

Some people like the HMO some people like the freedom a PPO provides.

  5. Health Maintance Organization.

You have in-network medical benefits only, meaning you HAVE to use the doctors & hospitals approved by the insurance. If you don't, there's no coverage.

Usually, you MUST have a primary care doctor.

You must get referrals for all specialty care.

    Its cheaper, but more restrictive.
