Question:

What is an IEP student?

My teacher brought up the term 'IEP student' in class a few weeks ago. I don't think any of us knew what it meant so we asked her. She said that if we didn't know what it meant, then it wasn't important for us to know and we didn't need to know.

What is it?

  1. In the United States an Individualized Education Program, commonly referred to as an IEP, is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.... so basically the kid was disabled in some ways, and she probably didnt want anybody making fun of the kid or embarrasing the student in any way.

  2. IEP are usually for a student in special education  for a learnign disability such as dyslexia, a health problem that makes it difficult for the student to learn, a behavior problem, etc...Most students with IEPs have average or above average intelligence.  they may just need extra time or oral tests, etc.  to even the playing field so they have the same opportunities as students without extraordinary disabilities.

Some states include students in wheelchairs, blind, deaf, ESL, Gifted as IEP students.

  3. An IEP is a review of your goals your class settings for next year and to basicly see where you are.

  4. To clarify some information from a previous poster, a student MUST have one of the following disabilities (varies slightly by state) in order to have an IEP.  You can't just have "learning differences," having a legitimate disability that affects learning is a requirement for an IEP:

    specific learning disability

    mental retardation

    autism spectrum disorder

    other health impairment

    visual impairment

    hearing impairment

    deafness

    deaf/blindness

    orthopedic impairment

    speech/language impairment

    emotional disturbance

    behavior disorder

    traumatic brain injury

    neurological impairment

    multiple disabilities

  5. Awwww....

My son is an "IEP" student because he's autistic. Don't be set off by it. I'm kind of surprised that the teacher said it that way and would honestly say something to the proper "authoritative" figure regarding it because honestly, if the student may have heard, he/she might be hurt by it. All it really means is that the student that the teacher was referring has a specialized plan which is determined by a special ed committee and that childs parents to make sure that the particular student is receiving all that they need to be successful. Kids learn differently...especially if they have some kind of disability...the IEP just makes sure that they are being taught the best way the school system can to make sure they have the opportunity to grow and learn too.

  6. IEP, means Individualized Education Program

An IEP is put in place for a student with a disability that adversly affects his or her learning.

Your teachers' comment is a common problem. People still want to hide people with disabilities and believe they are not a part of our everyday world or classroom. Instead everyone should be educated on disability awareness. It is a shame that she wouldn't explain these terms to you and your classmates.

Kudos to you for wanting to learn more about this. Think about how that student or students in your class must feel being that the teacher (and probably others) feel that it is not necessary to recognize them.
