What is an IRC bot?

My friends were listening to this song Boten Anna and were trying to explain it to my but I'm not very technology-savvy and I can't quite understand an IRC. Layman's terms would be greatly appreciated. :D

Chatroom Bots (or IRC Bots) are computer programs. They are used on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to help control and protect chat rooms. They can do many of the things that a human user can do such as gather data, kick users out of the channel, ban users, or even send stats to other programs and websites.

IRC Bots/Chatroom bots are used in many things now, from sending RuneScape statistics, to keeping track of users who abuse the networks.

Popular IRC bots: Eggdrop, psotnic, Winbot, EnergyMech, Infobot, blootbot, Supybot, Pircbot, jsircbot, WanderBot and WieBot.NET.

An IRC bot is liek... a bot in an IRC chat thingy; it's kinda liek a real person, too.

If you use AIM, a bot is kinda like SmarterChild.

Well a BOT is an internet robot of sort

Like real robots, bots (in internet terms) perform tasks that are repetitive in nature and often do it in a clustered way (together)

I love Basshunter (the dude who wrote/sings Boten Anna)

An IRC bot is a computer program in a chat room that acts like a person, kind of. They can talk and do stuff automatically These can be there to spam, or they can be there to kick people out who use profanity and stuff (like an automatic moderator).

In the song, he fell in love with a bot, who turned out to be a real person, but then things were wierd for him or something... I don't really understnad his disappointment, but whatever. =P

There is an English version of the song, Now You're Gone, but it's not a translation. It's totally different, and from what I have read, not even from Basshunter.
