What is an ISO file? Can it be played on a home DVD player?

I hear everybody talking about them and I jus got a computer capable of burning DVD's. I'm also getting a lot of free software recommendations but none of them are working at the time for burning DVD videos. If someone could please help me out, i would be very thankful.

  1. A ISO file is a file that would contain a computer OS like linux. When you go to www.ubuntu.com and download it, it's a .iso file that you are downloading.


  2. a .iso file is just a disc image file. It could be a CD image, it could be a DVD image, but regardless it needs to be burned on to a disc to be played in a home DVD player. It could contain a computer program instead of a movie. If the .iso is larger than roughly 714mb, then it's a DVD. Smaller, it's a CD.

    If you want to use it on your computer, you can "mount" it without actually burning it to a disc with a virtual optical drive such as Daemon Tools:
