What is an LDS Institute? ?

I'm wondering what the difference between an LDS institute and an LDS church is...looking for an answer preferably from someone in the LDS church because I'm guessing they would know the most about it. What do Mormons do at institutes? I bring this up because there's one across from my college and I see it every day...and it doesn't really look like a church.

Thanks!

  1. i'm familiar with institute although i've never been. It's designed to be a place to take religious classes on the Mormon religion. So scriptures and church history. Its also a social gathering place for members. Anyone can sign up to take classes but few are ever interested.

  2. institute sounds like higher learning=college

  3. those are indoctrination places mainly for their youth... but a cult house by any other name is still a cult house... they try to get them as close as they can to every school or college.

  4. Institute is where college-aged kids go to learn about the Gospel...

(They offer classes on a range of subjects.)

    Nothing more, nothing less.

    :]

  5. It's classes that young people (college age) can take to learn more about their faith.
