  1. Majesty's Bloody Empire

  2. Member of the British Empire. For exceptional service to such empire,  -- since there no longer is a British Empire, it is now irrelevent, and needs renaming- could be " Member of the British Entity"

  3. Member of the British Empire - awarded by the Queen for special services to the country or Commonwealth.

  4. The Order of the British Empire was created during the First World War in 1917 by George V. The King recognised the necessity for a new award of honour which could be more widely awarded, in recognition of the large numbers of people in the British Isles and other parts of the Empire who were helping the war effort both as combatants and as civilians on the home front.

    The five classes are:

Knight Grand Cross (GBE) or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)

Knight Commander (KBE) or Dame Commander (DBE)

    Commander (CBE)

    Officer (OBE)

    Member (MBE)

From 1918 onwards there were Military and Civil Divisions, as George V also intended that after the war the Order should be used to reward services to the State, defined in a much wider sense to acknowledge distinguished service to the arts and sciences, public services outside the Civil Service and work with charitable and welfare organisations of all kinds. The Order of the British Empire is the order of chivalry of the British democracy. Valuable service is the only criterion for the award, and the Order is now used to reward service in a wide range of useful activities. There are more than 100,000 living members of the Order throughout the world.

  5. It stands for member of the Order of the British Empire and is a gong you get for being considered a good chap.  We no longer have an empire, but we do a nice line in ceremonies.

  6. Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Something noteworthy or for performing a valuable service for a lengthy period.

It has been granted more recently on the basis of open proposals made by the public. Obviously, that particularly applies to the above.

It is a mark of recognition for that service.

  7. As others have said it means 'Member of the British Empire' and, as such, is outdated since Britain haven't had an Empire for years and so means nothing!

People generally get it for doing the job they're already paid to do. They are nominated by sycophants who think they should be honoured in this way, but the whole honours system in the UK should be scrapped as it's utterly meaningless and outdated.
