What is an SD card?

I'm thinking of getting a digital camera. Does an SD card enable you to store more photos on the camera, and what else does it do? And also, how do you install and get photos off it and things?

SD is a brand of memory card.  Devices will say on the box what kind of memory cards it uses.

Basically, SD cards are used to store data (such as the photos on your camera). When used with a camera, it will definately enable you to store many more images, as the internal memory of a digital camera is generally pretty small. You can purchase SD cards of various sizes, from 256mb upwards towards sizes including 1, 2, 4gb and more. So basically, instead of taking a small amount of pictures and realising you don't have enough space left to take more (meaning you won't have to upload them to your computer anywhere near as frequently), with an SD card you will be able to take up to hundreds of photographs withought any fuss.

You can upload images from them in a number of ways:

1. you can use the usb cable supplied with the carmera to plug the camera into your computer and get the images directly off the camera

2. a lot of computers come with card slots of various sizes, so you could remove the card from your camera when you want to upload pictures and insert it into your PC directly

3. if you dont have card slots in your computer, you can purchase an external one

An SD card is a memory card. Allows you more space to take pictures and stuff. To take the pictures out, just plug it into your computer, go to My Computer find your SD card and drop and drop. Easy as that.

The SD card is the "storage" on your camera. The camera usually comes with an USB-cable so you can transfer your pictures from your camera. No installation required.

Else you could buy an USB SD Reader, which is basicly a memory stick where you put the card in, and it'll work just like a normal memory stick.
