  1. First of all, I have two add-on domains in addition to my main domain.

The other answerers are somewhat incorrect, as an add-on domain is not just a sub-domain but is it's own domain, and purchase of a new domain name is necessary whereas a sub-domain does not need a new domain name purchase.

A sub-domain must be accessed from the web like this-

    www.subdomainsname.domainsname.com

An add-on domain can be accessed from the web like this-

    www.addondomainsname.com

and can also be accessed like a sub-domain.

An add-on domain actually creates it's own seperate namespace on the web and does not have to be accessed like a sub-domain, although it can be. How it works is like this: let's say you have your main domain which is named www.mysite.com. You create an add-on domain by purchasing another domain name and pointing the DNS (Domain Name Server) settings towards your existing domains server ( if new domain purchased from a different registrar than your current host, otherwise if purchased from current host DNS may be pointed to correct server already ). Let's say your new add-on domain's name is www.secondsite.com . Then in your control panel for your current site you select create add-on domain and you then put in the name of your new site and create a new folder for it on your current sites root (in the public_html folder). Then it takes 1 to 3 days for the new domain name to "propagate" throughout the web before you can access it from the web. The add-on domain, as I said earlier creates it's own seperate namespace on the web, and so you will be able to access it by typing www.secondsite.com into browser. You should of course create it's own homepage index.html inside the new folder on your root (name the folder secondsite.com). Note that an add-on domain is also a sub-domain and can be accessed on the web by typing www.secondsite.mysite.com into browser also, but I would not advertise it as such. You would treat it as it's own domain (because it is) and advertise it as www.secondsite.com

As you may see here, the add-on domain is portable whereas a subdomain is not. If you later decide to move the domain www.secondsite.com to a totally different host all together you can and still keep your www.mysite.com at your current host. A sub-domain is not portable like this because a sub-domain is not it's own seperate namespace on the web.

  2. An addon domain - Im pretty sure is the ability to have an addon to your actual domain sooooo say your domain is

    www.answers.com.

You have the ability to create an unlimited amount of sub or addon domains so here are a few:

    new.answers.com

    another.answers.com

    cool.answers.com

And so on - so basically you can create sub-domains within your original domain account. This is perfect if you have a business that caters for a number of different items so you can break the site up! Hope that helps!

  3. I would assume that an add-on domain would be a modifyer such as addon.lunarpages.com.  Though I could be completely wrong and that could just be additional domains at a discount.
