  1. It is also sometimes referred to as "capture-bonding."  Stockholm Syndrome refers to a hostage or victim of a kidnapping who comes to sympathize with the person who is holding them captive.  The name refers to a hostage-taking situation in a bank in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1973,  in which some of the hostages became so psychologically bonded with their captors that they didn't want to be rescued and refused to testify against them.  Patty Hearst was a well-known victim of "Stockholm Syndrome;"  she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in the mid-70s, and she ended up joining them, participating in a robbery that resulted in the death of a woman.
