What is an appropriate age for a child to come home after school and stay by themselves for a couple hours?

I know it depends greatly on the child's maturity and trustworthyness. But if the child is very mature and very trustworthy.

Well, i did it when they were ten. You would think that is a little early but they are fine and you have to see if they are not responsible enough but you have to test them, they have to prove to you that they are good. What i do is i make them call me everyday when they come home or if they don't i ground them. So when you want to talk to me just email me.

At 11 they can take a babysitters course that goes over everything about staying home alone. It talks about how to answer a phone or the door if no one else is home and CPR and emergency situations. I think 11 is a good age if the child has taken the CPR course. That way he or she is prepared.

I think that it is based on their maturity level.  I've had to leave my 8-9 year old home for about an hour.  All she does is watch tv, and she has my number and she knows the rules.  But I'm also only about 5 minutes away too.  I could leave her for longer periods but then that might make me a child neglecter in someone elses book.

i would say as soon as they start secondary school or high school if it is the same age group (11-12). you know your own child though if you say they are mature and very trustworthy then id check that the he/she feels comfortable being home alone first and give it a trial period.
