What is an appropriate outfit to wear to an outside wedding in october?

I want to wear a dress but ive never been to a wedding and i don't know what kind of dress is appropriate. the wedding is outside so i don't know if i would be cold. i don't think a long dress is appropriate for a wedding so I'm thinking a short dress?

since it sounds like an 'backyard' type wedding? you won't have to be THAT dressy. most 'outside' weddings you dont. i would say a cute spaghetti strap dress that goes to your knees or a little above (no more then one inch and a half) in like a brownishh fall color. you don't wanna wear black (although many people do) and of course no light clothes (: don't be copyinnn the bride hereee. hah, so yea, and then in case its cold, wear pantyhose, goldishh heels (matters of YOUR taste though) and then a quarter-long sleeve nice brown shurg/sweater.
