  1. Some would be on salary for a museum, university or government.  Some would get grants for particular projects, again from government or private institutions.

  2. Depends on whart part of the field they go into.  the two biggies are:

    Academic/Museum - university backing mixed with grants they can win

    CRM - either public money (state/federally employed, such as at NPS) or private developers that need archaeological investigations to get permits in accordance with NEPA, NHPA or other state/federal legislation

  3. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it is funding an archaeologist receives. :)
