What is an average price to retire in a retirement home?

I've not seen a published figure (you could try googling)--but it will be heavily dependent on the facility, the location, the age of the retiree, whether or not they are married, how much space they want, etc.

Some, but not all, retirement facilities have an entrance fee and some, but not all, refund some of this when the person dies or moves.

Tons of variables...especially location.  For California full time Alshymers care runs about $5,000./month.  For independant living with meals starts around $1200/month for a single.  There is all kinds of choices in better.  The private board and care places seemed a bit cheaper, but the larger places offer great social choices.  I spent hours researching this in Northern California.
