  1. an earned run is when the pitcher lets up a run from basehits of a homerun, not because of an error.  BTW,   HH coppied his answer from wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earned_run

  2. basically it is any run that is scored before what would have been the third out of an inning.  Example.  two out and a player reaches on an error.  Next batter hits a home run. both are unearned because the error would have been the 3rd out.  If the home run would have been before the error it would have been an earned run.

  3. In baseball, an earned run is any run for which the pitcher is held accountable (i.e., the run scored as a result of normal pitching, and not due to a fielding error or a passed ball).

  4. A run scored that was allowed by a pitcher by hit, walk, hbp, but if a run is scored after an error is committed by a fielder, then that is an unearned run.

  5. An earned run is when some one scores off a hit or if they hit a home run.

  6. Basically, an earned run is a run scored resulting from base hits, as opposed to runs scored via walks, hit batsmen, or errors.
