i work in a very low income school in a very poor area. i teach high school spanish to very uninterested kids who hardly take notes, never do homework, cut class a lot and then wonder why they fail the tests. i am looking for ideas of a teacher made grading system that makes my life easier and helps these kids not fail. the grading policy of the school changes every year, there is no consistency and everything i have tried always ends up giving me endless calculations and doing report cards six times a year is making me want to quit from all the work. i need ideas of how to evaluate their work through tests, writing assignments or mini projects. i also want to know what is the easiest way to calculate their work. i found a health teacher who uses excel and her easy way of doing her grades is by making everything count the same. she gives a grade from1-100 for everything she makes them do and gives them the average grade of everything. my only problem with that is that i teach verbs, vocabulary and spelling. i have to give frequent quiz/tests and always end up with a million things to grade from 160 students all the time. please i need to hear from the language teachers out there or anyone with some ideas. thank you!!!

  1. These kids are obviously not interested. Just do an average grade and lay off the quizzes if you feel it is too hard to grade 160 quizzes. You could also give HW and grades based on participation and completion.

  2. There are ways to get your students interested in the work AND making your grading easier. Have food days and just give credit to those who contribute, make traditional Spanish things, such as El Dia De Los Muertos altars and pinatas. If you make the class fun, then they will be more inclined to do their work if it's not all. " Ok class, do pages 1-3 tonight, there's a test tomorrow, etc."
