  1. The very best way without a stone is to buy a fairly cheap product called Accusharp. You drag it down the blade and it will sharpen it better then most people can sharpen one on a whetstone- look it up on the net-I've used one when in a hurry and they worked great.

  2. You're not gonna believe this...but...

You can sharpen a pocket knife in the rough edge of a coffee cup or a saucer. Any ceramic or China coffee cup or saucer will have a rough edge. I learned that from a chef who said that there was no excuse for ever having a sharp knife in the kitchen. Just use that little bit of rough area on the bottom of a coffee cup like you would a whet stone...on an angle.

  3. Pay someone else to do it.

Buy a stone, they are cheap.

  4. You can use a rock or even a concrete curb, but you might damage the blade.

  5. You could use a rock if you don't care about wrecking the finish.

  6. Diamond dust sharpeners work well or aluminum carbide can do an okay job.

If you are in a pinch any surface that is harder than the blade will remove metal from the blade.  (It might not "sharpen" your blade, but it could potentially.  It depends on your sharpening skill level.)

In the woods in a survival situation you can take the bark off of a green tree limb, take a rock to push the limb against, get some sand.  Mash the sand into the limb with the rock. Now draw your blade across the limb that has the bits of sand imbeded in it and you can put a rudimentary edge back on a blade.

  7. Yep, the guy above me got it right. ceramic can put a very fine edge on a blade.

  8. A leather strap, like a cinch strap on a saddle

The exhaust pipe on your truck
