  1. As I see it an emotion is the bodies reaction to thought .

  2. An emotion is a mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. It is a prime determinant of the sense of subjective well-being and appears to play a central role in many human activities. As a result of this generality, the subject has been explored in many, if not all of the human sciences and art forms. There is much controversy concerning how emotions are defined and classified.

  3. Why does everything need to have simple answers? An emotion is not a simple thing.

What could potentially answer this question for you? Do you want a list of all of the items and circumstances that make up each emotion? That's silly. It's silly to try to define something so complex as an emotion with a few measly lines.

But there are some interesting things that we know about emotions. Here are a couple of them:

    1. Emotions are embodied. We often think that emotions control our facial expressions, but this relationship is bidirectional. Several psychological studies have been done as follows: manipulate the facial muscles of subjects so that they are smiling or frowning, then give them some sort of test of happiness, anger, etc. If you smile, it makes you happier - literally. To say that emotions are embodied goes one step further. This school of thought argues that the cognitive state of emotion *is* the facial muscles and the brain, and the state of the body in general. These ideas started with the work of William James.

    2. Emotions are universal. All people in all cultures seem to experience the same emotions (at least the big ones). This means that we probably don't learn emotions, but that they are (at least somewhat) a part of our biology. Certainly however our development, our family, our culture, shapes our emotions. These ideas largely came from work from Charles Darwin, though they aren't the ones he was most famous for.

As to the function of emotion, you might think to Charles Darwin again. Emotion almost certainly has evolved with us to help us adapt to our environments. In the case of relationships, one can think of the reproductive value (in a natural selection sense) in feeling pain when a relationship doesn't work, or if we're jealous. And the survival value in being afraid. etc etc.

of course, you can always see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotion

  4. emotion is just a feeling. emotion gives us the sense of being alive. if don't have an emotion then you are good as dead. pinch your-self and you will feel an emotion.

  5. I'd say a emotion is a connection of our mental state and our reactions to our surroundings.
